Grip Size Finder

A starting grip size from one hand measurement, with a glove-size fallback, the reasons, and the in-hand check that decides. Grip size is the cheapest fitting change you can make, and the easiest to get wrong.

Upper (lead) hand, palm up on a table, fingers together. Ruler flat against the palm.

How to measure

A palm-up lead hand measured from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger
  1. Use your upper hand: the left hand for a right-handed golfer.
  2. Rest it palm up on a table, fingers together and relaxed.
  3. Lay a ruler flat against the palm and read from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger.
  4. Enter it in inches or centimetres. If you cannot measure, pick the glove size you actually wear on that hand.

How the size is chosen

Hand length is mapped with the bands Golf Pride publishes in its swing grip size guide: Junior under 5", Undersize 5.0" to 6.5", Standard 6.5" to 7.5", Midsize 7.5" to 9.1", Jumbo / Oversize over 9". Glove sizes use the same guide's mapping. Within a fifth of an inch of a band edge the neighbouring size is flagged, because two to four extra wraps of tape under a grip give an in-between size and are a cheaper experiment than a new set of grips.

The number is a starting point. Hands with long fingers and a short palm, or the reverse, can sit a size away from the chart, which is what the in-hand check is for. Grip shape, taper and the number of tape wraps all change the effective size, so ask for the build to be written down.

What grip size changes

  • Too small tends to let the hands over-rotate through impact; too big can restrict release and leave the face open. Both are tendencies, not rules.
  • Bigger grips are heavier: about 5 g more grip weight drops swing weight by a point. The swing weight estimator shows the exact effect for your club.
  • Worn grips play smaller and slicker than the size on the label. Replace before you re-fit.
  • Tape wraps are the fine adjustment: each wrap adds roughly 1/64 inch of diameter.

Next in the fit sequence

With length, lie and grip settled, the shaft is the next variable worth testing.

Changed something? Measure it on the course.

A fitting hypothesis only becomes a fit when the numbers back it up. Golfonaut on Apple Watch records your shots and shows carry and dispersion per club, so you can compare before and after any change to length, lie, grip, shaft or swing weight.
